Om Namah Shivaya Gurave

I thought I would answer Annie's (one of the most brave women I know by the way) last post, here, so everyone can read it. Because it's very important. She asked what the first written lines on the top of the chalkboard were, from my yoga class. They are, as above, and so below:

Om Namah Shivaya Gurave

The first line of the mantra/chant that we sing at the beginning of each Anusaraya Yoga class. The entire chant and its translation breaks down as follows:

Om Namah Shivaya Gurave: I offer myself to Lord Shiva, the Auspiscious One, who is the true teacher Within and Without.

Saccidananda Murtaye: Who Assumes the forms of Reality, Consciousness and Bliss.

Nishprapanchaya Shantaya: Who is never absent and is full of peace.

Niralambaya Tejase: Independent existence, the vital essence of illumination.

I don't know what it is about this chant but it infuses my entire body with a sense of well being. Even though I rarely take the time to translate the words in my mind, the effect is still present. I frequently find msyelf driving down the road chanting, "Om Namah Shivaya Gurave" just because it makes me feel good!

I'm doing chakra work with Rainbow Dreams as well as with my new guru and it seems like this chant opens up each of the seven energy centers. It's all about the flow, or non-flow, of energy. That's why my yoga mat investment was so important to me. It is an investment in MY LIFE.

And each of you reading here add to the blessing of that life. And so to you: Namste', which breaks down to "I see and acknowledge the light in you."

Thank you so much for answering my question. It is a wonderful mantra. I will ask my yoga teacher about it as well. Hopefully she will be able to tell me how to pronounce all the words properly!

Thank you also for the wonderful compliment. Brave is not a word that I would have thought of in relation to myself. I just get through life as I have to, in the best way I know how, with as much honesty and inner truth as I can. Brave? Mm, I will have to think on that one!! :)

Love,
Annie

Thank you for sharing this. I've been exploring lately the phenomenon of energy carried within words. If written while in a state of higher consciousness, they can bring our energy frequency up when they touch us...through sound or even on the page. Life is full of mystery.

Annie,

I think it's common that we often don't recognize our best characteristics! You are brave!

Let me first agree that Annie is one of the bravest and beautiful woman I know.

Then let me say that I am so happy to read these translations. Thank you for the detail. Now, I just have to figure out the correct pronunciation :)

Here goes Angela. May open a can of worms, but worms have been crawling lately. I am going to ask it.... why is it called recovering and not recovered? In the form of intention and claiming and praying, my wisest teachers say to form your intention with the aleady healed state in your intention. Aren't you limiting your true self by consistently claiming recovering and not recovered?

Angela said...

Turtlegirl,

That's a very good question and one I've been pondering for myself lately. The term "recovering" comes from the doctrine of "once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic". Most people deem it bad language usage to consider themselves recovered, because the alcohol is always waiting in the wings to return at a vulnerable moment. Even I feel some hesitation at using the term recovered. But, I'm getting over it pretty quick. :) Thanks for asking and for taking my questioning to an even deeper level. That's why I did this whole thing in the first place.

Namaste, Angela, always.

Namaste literally means 'i bow to you,' in a respectful sense. what you have is a fancy meaning...and by now i have this lil itch in my head that why is your teacher giving you a shiva mantra for yoga...shiva was a rockstar when it comes to Indian gods, he drank, he boozed, he once chopped off the head of his own son, he's got snakes around his neck, and he is just uber cool, being a yogi is just on the sidelines, he was a fun guy, also his dance "Tandav" destroy the whole world...search on wikipedia!

I suggest go for "Gayatri Mantra"...please do tell me on my blog what you think about this, correct me if i'm wrong,i might be!

take care!

Nothingman,

I'm afraid you misunderstood the chant. It's "shivaya", not "shiva." However, if were going to chant with a particular god in mind, Shiva is probably a pretty good one for me. :) Thanks for stopping by.

I just discovered this blog. I love the "Om Namah Shivaya Gurave" mantra.

In response to Northingman, true about Shiva, I guess (I'm no expert), but he's also viewed as the god of change (which is, afer all, destruction of the old and no longer useful).

I also love the Gayatri mantra, which, if you don't know it, you can hear at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDnamSM3Z3s
or just google Gayatri

Peace and Love,
Bob

The Lord Shiva is so much more than a "rock star." He is the great Aum, the all in one, and the great yogi and asthetic. In Gayatri mantra Shiva is Savitur. If you perform difficult tapasya, the Lord will come to your aid. Make recovery your tapasya, and Shiva will help you transcend.
